The Benefits of Moving South

You’ve grown tired of the long, cold winters and icy sidewalks in the northern United States. Or maybe you’ve been offered the opportunity to open a branch of your company down south. 

There are many benefits of moving to the southern U.S. that you can start enjoying as soon as your bags are unpacked. Here are 5 of them:

Weather

As the calendar will tell you, winter is upon us — and it’s wintry weather that drives many to consider quitting the Northeast for good. Indeed, the largest population migration between states is from New York to Florida, according to data from the Census Bureau. And simple looks at recent winters in the Northeast provides some perspective. For example, in 2015, Boston had its snowiest winter on record, and New York City had one of the worst blizzards in its history in 2016.

Charm

If you’re looking to settle down (and not necessarily a fan of rushing from one place to the next), the southern hospitality life is for you. When it comes to raising a family, Charleston is one of the best cities to live in America. There’s a wonderful public school system, low crime rates and endless activities for kids and families. Charleston real estate has some of the best neighborhoods in the state. 

Food

Living in the South allows you to experience some tasty food. Pulled pork, smoked ribs, corn bread, and slow boiled collard greens are some of the most common signature foods eaten in the South. Home cooked delicious dishes from the South are usually referred to as “soul food”—especially in the black community. This type of food is supposedly made with a lot of love, and from the heart and soul of the cook.

Southern Hospitality

Despite what society says, there’s still a place for manners in the South. Before most children are taught how to spell or how to count, they learn these few magic words: “yes, ma’am,” “no, sir,” “please” and “thank you.” The idea is that if we’re taught at a young age how to be polite, it’ll carry us through the rest of our lives as adults. And because we love company and, admittedly, talking, conversations with loved ones and guests are never rushed. The motto of the South is “what’s the hurry?” and that is certainly reflected in the way (and pace) in which we speak and engage other people. 

Cowboy Boots

Weddings, funerals, first dates, concerts, mowing the grass, dancing or playing basketball. No matter what the occasion, cowboy boots are acceptable footwear in the South. You’ll see boots worn to church, fancy restaurants, family picnics and even with shorts. Easy to slip on and rugged enough for any terrain, cowboy boots will do the job.
